Matt Carpenter, and a most remarkable feat.

In the bottom of the 1st, Matt Carpenter doubled.

This is no longer news.

St. Louis trailed Cincinnati 1-0 after Joey Votto shot a ball over the fence, just beyond Jason’s Heyward’s grasp.

With one out, and Carpenter standing on third, the Cardinals looked for a sacrifice.

Matt Holliday hit a soft fly into shallow center.

Centerfielder Billy Hamilton raced the ball as it fell, reaching to make the catch on his left.

Carpenter quickly retreated back to third base.

When it was safe, he ran home.

Hamilton fired the ball through the infielders, bouncing it in the grass on its way to catcher Brayan Pena.

Pena took the throw with Carpenter bolting down the line.

The runner was still several feet from safety.

As the ball arrived, Carpenter reached over Pena’s back as if to steal his wallet.

But instead, he turned a somersault over the catcher’s back, flipping headfirst.

Pena fumbled the ball, perhaps in shock.

Carpenter swept his hands over home plate.

The game was tied.
