Jon Jay checked his swing on a skidding ball in the dirt.
He ran to first on the walk.
And Kolten Wong raised his bat to his shoulder.
And dug his toe into the white chalk outlining home plate.
He waited for Clayton Kershaw to kick and fire.
Jay dove headfirst into 1st, smacking his ring finger on the bag.
The first baseman kicked the base, dumping clay out of his cleats.
Jay leaned toward 2nd.
He rolled back and forth on his feet.
And dove back into 1st.
The ball bounced before home plate, then hit Wong’s bat, then the player himself.
Out.
Jay ducked his head and took his glove.
