An Eventful Third

Mark Reynolds hit from the right, with a pink bat in his hands and pink shoes on his feet.

He hit a weak grounder to the pitcher to start the inning, but not because of his fashion.

The Pirates’ lefty, Jason Locke, twisted until he stared down the first baseman, then uncorked a pitch to Jason Heyward.

Heyward dribbled a grounder to shortstop Jordy Mercer, who charged it, snagged it with his glove and shoveled the ball to first.

The runner was safe.

Heyward balanced his left foot on first base, waiting to advance.

Pitcher Tyler Lyons hit, lunging for a pitch on a bunt and popping it to the third baseman Josh Harrison.

Peter Bourjos hit with two out.

He wore red and blue striped socks pulled up to his knees.

But he still lined out to Andrew McCutchen in center.

Done.

Locke led off the 3rd for the Pirates, who wore uniforms packed away in closets since 1987.

Locke dusted off the mothballs, striking out looking.

Harrison wore black and gold stirrups, which pirates of another variety might consider for marketing purposes.

He cracked a grounder to short, a loud hit that didn’t get him anywhere.

Jung Ho Kang hit with two out, twirling his right foot when he took a pitch.

His last at bat, he took a pitch to the bleachers.

With a 3-1 count, he watched a strike and grumbled.

He grounded the next to Peralta.

And the inning was over.
