An afternoon in St. Louis (Cards vs. Brewers)

Not much doing through two against Milwaukee.

St. Louis left men standing on bases instead of running between them.

And second baseman Kolten Wong made his third error in three games.

Mike Fiers’ pitch count started to worry, but his 31st looped like a roller coaster, and he soon retired Wong on a fly ball for the third out of the 2nd.

The Brew Crew put runners on for Ryan Braun in the 3rd.

Some hitter.

But he scraped the plate with his bat on a third strike from John Lackey.

Fiers, though, retired nine in row for Milwaukee, until Mark Reynolds lined a single to center with two out in the 4th.

Still scoreless.

Bottom 6th. Matt Carpenter drove a ball into the right center gap. He stopped at second and asked Jason Heyward to advance him further. Or. Okay. Matt Holliday?

He singled to make it 1-0. And then he stole second.

Jhonny Peralta knocked the dirt off his soles and singled to center, sending Holliday to third.

Reynolds drove a ball to the wall, scoring the second Cardinal run. Peralta tried to touch home, too.

It remained 2-0.

But John Lackey struck out eight in seven scoreless innings and gave up five hits.

In the 7th, Wong doubled, then Carpenter did, adding one more run.

In the 8th, Randal Grichuk doubled, and Yadier Molina drove him home to make it 4-0 St Louis.

Matt Belisle set down the first three Milwaukee hitters in the 9th, giving St. Louis their second win in the three game series. Milwaukee sunk to the bottom of the NL Central, and the Cardinals climbed to a first place tie.

With the Cubs.
