It’s possible some employees of the St. Louis Cardinals organization tampered with the Houston Astros player database.
The Cardinals look bad, which is almost as good as other teams doing well.
Still, it’s particularly embarrassing for an organization that prides itself on doing things “the Cardinal Way.”
The term is obnoxious. The stellar farm system, recent attendance records, and 11 World Series titles is less so.
Still, what does it even mean to do something like this?
Jeff Luhnow used to take charge of player development and scouting for St. Louis.
In 2011, he left to become general manager of the Astros.
Perhaps a couple of former employees used their old supervisor’s passwords to tap into his data to get back at him.
Change your passwords.
It doesn’t make sense to comb Luhnow’s information for player data.
You can see those results at Busch Stadium with far less eyestrain.
Matt Carpenter. Michael Wacha. Matt Adams.
Lance Lynn. Jon Jay. Kolten Wong.
Jaime Garcia. Trevor Rosenthal.
(Joe Kelly, Shelby Miller, Daniel Descalso, too.)
And until recently, the Astros were nothing to emulate.
Thanks to Luhnow, they are now decent, with a surprising run to first place this season.
Perhaps the GM will build them as successfully as he helped build the Cardinals.
Of course, Houston is no longer division rivals with St. Louis. They don’t even play in the same league anymore.
Not yet, so to speak.
The Cardinals know that.
How much more do they need to know?
