Jason Heyward cheered from the cover of Sports Illustrated. There were only five or six copies remaining in the rack, fingerprints smudged on his shoes. Perhaps some deviant had reached for Heyward’s heel, only to be crushed by his metal cleats.
But enough about the Cubs.
The Cardinals have been anointed. The Cardinals have been cursed. Indeed, such is the fate of those whose magazine photographs are destined to be framed in basements across the greater Midwest. Sports Illustrated, it has been said, jinxes its cover subjects.
The Redbirds already lost their ace. The team lost one power hitter in May and one in June.
Their best young talent DIED.
But it’s the editors of Sports Illustrated who will doom them.
They may have to put St. Louis on the cover again in a couple of months.
An apology won’t be necessary.
