I should be gracious, I should be nice.
I should be many things
I’m not.
My team has won many titles
so many I forgot
to notice a team in blue and red –
the baby bears that hibernated.
But now I find myself resenting those
that I once revered
and instead of feeling mockery
now I notice fear
of hitters and of pitchers
of bullpens and of bench
of players I didn’t know
but have noticed since
their team won 30 games in a snap
they hardly needed rally caps
what is this sense of loss I feel
without the Cubbies at the heels
of Cardinals and Pirates
and Brewers and Reds
of Astros back when
they played in the Central
and the Cubs didn’t win
but now Chicago’s in first place
and it is almost June
the summer that beckoned with gladness
now fills me with terror and doom
for I fear they may stay in first
and have a real rivalry
enough for me to spell it out
