  • Who’s Abner?

Author: olabner

Welcome! I've followed baseball since I was 8 years old and started this site to illustrate the beauty of the game in prose, poetry, and photography. I have a Master's in Creative Writing at Missouri State University. For my thesis I wrote a collection of nonfiction micro essays about working in remote Alaska fishing lodges for five summers in my 20s. After graduation I worked as a northern lights guide in Bettles, Alaska, for 8 months. You can find my favorite aurora photographs at bestnorthernlights.com I am a freelance writer and photographer. You can find my portfolio at maryellenchiles.com

Wainwright just right

Posted by olabner on May 8, 2018May 30, 2018 in Minors, Springfield Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals

Got to take photos of Adam Wainwright in Springfield during a rehab assignment with the AA Cardinals. I’m still trying to figure out how to write about his presence. Photos, for now. Pictured with, as Wainwright called him, future superstar…

Bears in the Wild

Posted by olabner on May 5, 2018May 5, 2018 in College, Missouri State, Photos

Just a few more games left with these Bears, then I’m off to Alaska to hang out with a different sort of bear for the summer. I’ll be rooting MSU on to Omaha from Gates of the Arctic National Park,…

The Bears in Black and White

Posted by olabner on May 5, 2018May 5, 2018 in College, Missouri State, Photos

Missouri State and Kansas, in which a KU player climbed into the stands, apparently to defend a parent from the taunts of frat boys. The player and the parent stayed in the park, but the frat boys did not. Someone…

Bears in the Dugout

Posted by olabner on May 1, 2018May 1, 2018 in College, Missouri State

Due to polite request  from certain infielders, and their parents by proxy, I present a few baseball Bears. They were winning the second game of a doubleheader, about to complete a 3-game sweep, and due to weather they would have…

Gallery of a Loss

Posted by olabner on April 15, 2018April 15, 2018 in College, Missouri State, Uncategorized

I don’t think anyone at Missouri State anticipated losing so badly. They lost 16-7 to Oregon State. The Beavs seemed to hit every other pitch. It was already 10-1 in the second inning in game 2 when the rain started….

Hallelujah; I love it so

Posted by olabner on April 13, 2018April 17, 2018 in Fan, Minors, Springfield Cardinals, Uncategorized

Baseball is back. Swoon! Check out some photos I took during last night’s home opener between the Springfield Cardinals (AA-StL) and Midland Rockhounds (AA-OAK) at Hammons Field in Springfield, MO. Louie doing the hula. Minor league baseball. Onward and upward….

Photos from a cold weekend at Hammons

Posted by olabner on March 29, 2018April 15, 2018 in Missouri State, MVC

Check out a collection of photographs from the Bears sweep of Cal State-Northridge during the weekend of March 23-25, 2018. Also – Albee Weiss over at CSUN. I believe that young man can hit pretty well. Just a guess.  …

Catching up with Jeremy Eierman

Posted by olabner on March 25, 2018July 15, 2019 in College, Interviews, Missouri State, Uncategorized

Earlier this year ago I sat down in the Missouri State University baseball players lounge with a shortstop from Warsaw, MO. He’s the best player from the area since, I suppose, his brother, who was drafted by Tampa Bay in…

Home Opener at Hammons

Posted by olabner on March 7, 2018March 7, 2018 in College, Missouri State, MVC, Uncategorized

Stressed by my grad school workload, I measured my available hours for the Bears home opener and came up with … as much as I could stand. By the time I got there I didn’t want to leave. I’m feeling…

Jake.

Posted by olabner on February 26, 2018February 26, 2018 in AL, Chicago White Sox, Minors, Missouri State, MLB, Uncategorized

I was writing up an interview with Jeremy Eierman, a 21-year-old junior shortstop at Missouri State and highly touted MLB draft prospect. But then I read that Jake Burger had been carted off the field after suffering an Achilles injury….
