St. Louis and Kansas City played tonight.
They wore jerseys and pants styled after their 1985 World Series.
St. Louis players wore patches that read “National League champions.”
The teams lost a game to the rain June 14, and reunited for a night on the Eastern side of the state.
The Cardinals led 4-2 to begin the ninth.
Trevor Rosenthal jogged in from the bullpen and began to throw.
He’s blown just two saves.
Just two.
But KC’s Alex Rios punched a ball to second. Kolten Wong flung the ball to first while Rios stretched his foot toward the base. Safe.
Then Omar Infante crushed a ball past the outfielders and chased down Rios on the base paths. Infante stopped at third.
Jarrod Dyson stood at the plate, his team down a run with a runner on.
Then there were two: Dyson drew a walk and stole second.
The next batter, Dusty Coleman, swung at strikes.
Fortunately for St. Louis, he missed them, giving Rosenthal the first out in the ninth.
Alcides Escobar walked to the plate, needing a fly out to tie the game.
Instead, he fought for a chopper to third. Infante sprinted home on contact.
Yadier Molina caught Matt Carpenter’s throw and tagged the runner.
Infante walked to the dugout, his team still down by one. Dyson took third.
Escobar, on base with the fielder’s choice, took second after a few pitches, giving the Royals runners at second and third again.
Mike Moustakas stood at home.
Two strikes.
He swung.
Wong picked up the ball.
Moustakas ran.
The play at first wasn’t close.
Not as close as it’s been before.
Cardinals 4, Royals 3.
