I have returned to Cardinal Country.

I have returned to the center of the universe.

It isn’t a bridge in Fremont.

It is a place where the newspapermen write of Pete Kozma’s glove and Randy Choate arm.

It is a place where the other state team; that is, the team that is from an area so far west it’s practically the next state over, is mentioned somewhere on page 3.

Even though they advanced to the World Series some 10 months ago.

This is the land of Mike Shannon rambling on the radio, with muted televisions, too, for images he misses.

This land is my land. It goes without saying.

Here, you will be welcomed with a mention of Game 6 by both St. Louis and Kansas City fans.

But only because David Freese will eat for free throughout the state.

And Don Denkinger will do so in less than half of these counties.

This is a religious place.

But there are Cardinal sins.
