Despair and Hope: an inning

Not to say they can’t make it up.

Not to say they cannot score more than two runs under the cool, thin air in Colorado.

For it is only the seventh.

But as Carlos Gonzalez knocks the ball into left field, and DJ LeMahieu scores from second, the Rockies take an insurance run.

It’s now 4-2.

And a Colorado base hit seems to mean a cold, grey October, time kicking leaves in twilight while children bounce a basketball.

There is no other game in town.

But! Peter Bourjos knocked a home run on the first pitch.

And the sun roused itself to look over the mountaintops and check on the ballgame.
