The Inner Cespedes

NY Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes gave up an inside-the-park home run when he saw the fly ball was lodged under the outfield wall and figured it was a ground rule double.

He could’ve picked it up, but he didn’t, and AJ Reed jogged around the bases, staring at the outfielder every few seconds, as if he’d been tricked.

Cespedes just didn’t know it was a live ball.

So he just stood there.

So we made fun of him.

But I remembered playing on a softball team and fielding a ground ball in shallow right center.

“Throw home,” the coach screamed.

I just stood there.

I finally tossed the ball toward second base, throwing the ball into the air so the fielder had to catch it like a popup.

The coach glared at me and spread his hands.

But I don’t know why I couldn’t throw the ball home.

For that minute I just couldn’t.

So I just stood there.
